Well,
after some testing and trying, it looks like the TechnoTrend S2-3200 is working quite well with MythTV 0.22, though I don’t have or use the DVB-S2 stuff yet… no dual LNB, no HD equipment, just testing for the future.
My Backend was running Ubuntu 9.04 with Mythtv 0.22 packages, which did find the card, but couldn’t use it.
I installed a test machine on an similar motherboard/config and used Ubuntu 9.10, and the card was detected. Switching the TVV smartcard over to the S2-3200 CAM/CI, I was able to scan and later tune in to the TVV encrypted channels!
Bottom line: Ubuntu 9.10, MythTV 0.22 and TT S2-3200 with TVV smartcard: working out of the box!
Update: Sander Van den Bosch has the same setup (kind of, also using the S2-3200 with a TVV subscription). He had an issue receiving the encrypted channels, and he asked for a little information (the reason I installed this testsetup and eventually did the upgrade on my ‘production’ backend). I tried, and he ‘copied’ what was successful for me, but he didn’t succeed in getting the same results.
In the end, he found out that his CAM (original TVV CAM) had an ‘old’ firmware, which wasn’t compatible… It seems my 2 CAM’s (also original TVV CAM modules) are ‘newer’… He used a Windows XP laptop to update the firmware, and succeeded in receiving the TVV encrypted channels! He was able to tune into Eén HD successfully!
Another happy MythTV – TV Vlaanderen user
Using the Technotrend DVB-S2 S2-3200, I am able to record BBC HD. Didn’t get the encrypted channels to work yet. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Ubuntu 9.10, MythTV 0.22
Well, someone with a similar setup as mine (S2-3200 with TV Vlaanderen smartcard and TVV CAM module) had a similar issue.
The solution was simple: it turned out the firmware of the CAM module was ‘old’ and unsupported by the card or MythTV. A simple update through a windows laptop and standalone firmwareupdate tool did the job.
If you give us a little more details (CAM in use, smartcard in the CAM, …) we might be able to solve your problem too?
Hi,
I bought the same capture card and matching CI module and I’m also running Ubuntu and MythTV but i’m not able to watch TVV channels.
I use their original CAM module and a working card (before the MythTV setup I used a Humax receiver and it workjed fine) but i’m only getting black on my TV screen and somewhat later it gives me an error with the buffer…
If i try a free channel like Radio 538, i’m able to hear the music, but when trying Studio Brussel the same buffer error happens again… Any suggestions?
Well,
first: Check if you can view the BVN channel, which is Free To Air…
If that works, it’s probably a decryption error.
What’s the Status when tuning in?
You should have a status ‘LAMC’ when it’s an encrypted channel and the decryption is working. ‘LAMc’ is displayed when the decryption can not be done: card not inserted, card not valid, too many channels at once, …
I suppose a similar issue like the other ones: CAM firmware…
I’ll look up the link and update procedure, which requires a windows laptop, and will post it here when found…
OK, I checked again with the person who had and resolved the issue, and he told me this:
Updating via a laptop doesn’t seem to work. In fact it’s even more easy to update the CAM card:
Put it in a certified TVV decoder, and tune into BVN. This will allow to update the CAM firmware of the inserted CAM module.
He had it done at a local TVV distributor who was glad to be of service.
After this update, he re-inserted the CAM with the smartcard in it, into his S2-3200 CI slot and tuned in to the encrypted TVV channels, withou any issue.
http://www.new.soundenvision.be/cimod.pdf describes what to do… (sorry, document is in dutch only)
So, if you have a certified decoder for TVV, or know someone who has one, just insert your CAM, and follow the points here-above.
If you don’t, you can look for a TVV distributor nearby. Maybe they can help you out updating the firmware for you.
Any thoughts or experiences? Post them back!
Hey Bram,
Thyanks for the info, this really helped me out, I did update the firmware like you said and it’s working like a charm.
Br,
Geoff.
Glad to be of help and service!
If you find some nice things and tips&ticks, don’t hesitate to share them with me/us, so I can post them on the blog to share them with other users!
Good luck and enjoy your TVV-MythTV setup
Bram
Hi Bram,
Well, I got the setup working fine now except for some parts…
I didn’t thought about it before buying, but the BluRay doesn’t seem to work in Ubuntu due to some right problems as i’ve read on the Ubuntu forums…
Also i’m trying to tune in with other frontends to the HTPV when it’s on, but sometimes it gives me video buffer errors, I don’t know what the problem is here, maybe not enough RAM, will have to look into that.
Also i’m having problems to get the diseq 1.2 rotor working in MythTV, i’ve seem to set it up just fine, (position1: 19.2E – Position2: 23,5E and position 3: 28.2E ) But the rotor doesn’t move, it just stays at 19.2E…
Otherwise the TV is running perfectly on Astra 1 (19.2E)! I get all the channels properly and TV Vlaanderen is running smooth with the setup!
For those who are surious and maybe also trying to setup a HTPC or Backend/Frontend system with Myth, here’s my HTPC Setup:
1x Case: Antec Fusion Black MediaCenter ATX remote – No PSU (http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/product.php?id=NzE4)
1x Motherboard: ASUS M3N78-VM – mATX – sAM2 (http://asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=ovqEgLFRjnSClhSV)
1x Power supply: Corsair VX450W – 450W Voeding

And finally a 80cm dish with rotor and a full HD tv.
Does anone here have experience with setting up and using a rotor in MythTV? doesn anyone have setup a Blu-Ray player in Ubuntu? Let me know and if I can be of service for any help, just let me know

PS: I’ve tried in my earlier post to add the links to the chosen hardware, but it was marked as spam, but you can look it up using Google too
Hey Bram,
I have a question, I’ve read on the MyhtTV website that multi-tuning is possible, you should be able to tune in 5 different channels for one hardware tuner.
And yes, I’ve tested it and it works perfectly with free to air channels, but it doesn’t seem to work with TV-Vlaanderen.
At one frontend tuning into één and the second frontend also tuning to één works ok, but when you try to tune in to another channel on one of both frontends, the one you last used jumps out of the live TV into the Myth menu and an error occurs, something about file buffer…
Do you have experiences with this? Did you managed to get multi tuning to work with TV Vlaanderen? and if yes, tell me about it
Multirec works fine for me about 80% of the times I want to use it.
Every sunday for instance, I record De Pappenheimers on Eén, House MD on 2Be, Oud Belgie (which ended last week) on Eén again and then the 2nd episode of Hous MD on 2Be. They overlap, + I use a pre-record time of 2minutes and an extra ‘overtime recording’ of 5 minutes, just so I don’t miss beginning or end of either…
They run just fine.
What I did notice is, that more than 3 channels is not possible, and that (I have to search which ones) some combinations of channels don’t work really well… I can record Eén, 2Be and VT4 without any issue, but changing one of them to VijfTV makes one of the recordings end up with an empty file.
Second, I need to beef up my storage system in the Backend. Disk (even with one recording) is 80-90% busy (install apt package sysstat and run iostat -d -x 1, you’ll see)… Currently I run a single-disk 500GB WD Green Power edition drive… I have a 3Ware 9500SE 4port raid controller lying around, which I’ll be testing in a similar machine, running a multirec, to see how heavily disk usage is then… and if it helps, I’ll put my ‘old’ 4 250GB Raid Edition WD drives in/on it… That will also solve my recordingspace issue at once :p (500GB isn’t all that much anymore…)
Bottom line: for me it works… sometimes it behaves strange… that’s all…
Just test, and my advice: start with 2 at once (set it on 2 in the mythtv-setup) just for starters…
I have a second card, and will install that one once I get an extra TVV Smartcard (which only costs an extra €2 /month… so why bother?)
Hi Bram,
I’ve been struggling with a linux + Tevii S660 + USB Phoenix cardreader setup
Tevii works perfectly with the unencrypted channels ( BBC’s , etc. ), but the TVV channels cannot be decrypted, I’ve tried everything from CCCam, newcamd, OSCam, but nothing works
does the TechnoTrend DVB-S2 S2-3200 work out of the box for encrypted channels ? can Kaffeine or MyhtTV immediately work without additional software like OSCam ?
and did you buy the official CI adapter from TVV ?
thanks for sharing all the information.
Dimi
With the official CAM which came with the ‘starters package’, and the DVB S2 3200 with its CI module attached, MythTV finds, decrypts and displays the encrypted TVV channels out-of-the-box. I never had any other brand of adapters which did the decryption any easier…
I really recommend this setup! It’s almost flawless, if you use a recent kernel which holds a driver for the DVB S2-3200… I’m using Ubuntu 9.10 on the backend server now, which works with any modification!
Good luck, and let me know what your results or issues are. we’re here to help each other out, no?
Thanks for the info ! I was already planning to buy the 3200 but this information has pushed me over the edge.
I’ll give an update once installed and used with MythTV.
kind regards,
Dimi
Hi Bram,
I already bougth a TT 3200 but didn’t had any time to install it in a separate backend. My shutlle is too small for the card+CI
Any update on the diseqc? You also use mc2xml?
Update:
in the afternoon going to pickup my order :
* DUO LNB QUAD MAXIMUM/WNC 78-88 Astra I/III 0,2 dB
* Triax 88cm
The TT3200 + CI is installed. I’m waiting for TVV till I’m sure my setup works (mc2xml). Is it still that you can not combine EIT with this?
Also looking to share my CI with some extra DVB-S2 cards in the same backend.(4) Is Cccam or smartwii the only way to do this? Cccam is more designed for remote sharing, that’s not really what I want. Tvv asks 2€ for a extr
….a card monthly. And you need to have at least the Basic option for this. (not the light)
is there experience Bram?
I have 3200 and have been trying to configure it use a rotor, has anyone been sucessful?
My experience:
- mc2xml works fine, I don’t use EIT, as it blocks the card/reception from time to time.
If you need info on it, the TVV channels I use are in a downloadable config file you can find here
- I use 2 cards in 2 separate receiving PCI cards, I have tried using a CCCam or other cardsharing solution, but never got it to work (the CI that came with the first card I bought wasn’t 100% compatible with the TVV CAM module). For now, I keep using the 2-card setup, and am happy to pay the extra €2 per month, even if it was just to ‘sponsor’ TVV to keep the receiver-choice ‘open’.
If you need configs, updates, info, help (except hands-on, no time in the coming weeks here), let me know!
I don’t need the rotor functionality (yet) in my setup, so no real experience with it.
What I can tell you, is that everyone I heard talking about it and using it, had serious issues with it. A couple of them even went with a ‘dual/triple sat dish/dual lnb with multiple input cards’ setup…
Sorry…
If you do find out, let me know, so we can post it here for others to find!
Hi letchcj and Bram: I have a rotor setup but didn’t get it to work either.
You need to take a look at which version of DiseqC is supported by your card. You need at least DiseqC 1.2 to use a motor, any version below (1.0 or 1.1) is only used when you have a multiple lnb setup.
- DiSEqC 1.0, switching between 4 satellites
- DiSEqC 1.1, switching between 16 satellites
- DiSEqC 1.2, switching between 16 satellites and control of a single axis satellite motor
and so on … (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DiSEqC or the dutch version http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/DiSEqC)
So if your card only supports DiseqC 1.0 or 1.1 which seems the case on most cards that are available on the market today like the Technotrend S2-3200, you won’t be able to control your rotor.
The only thing you can do is either buy another card or mount a second lnb to be able to watch Astra 19.2 and 23.5 for TVV (and you could install a tripple lnb if you want the 28.2 as well).
